Western Virginia Workforce Development Board
Regional Career & Technical Education Study, 2020
SEG conducted a study to assess the current operations, future plans, demands, and needs of career and technical education and workforce development (CTE) programs being offered in the Roanoke Valley and Alleghany Highlands region of Virginia. The study involved three distinct components: 1) stakeholder engagement, 2) program review, and 3) findings and recommendations. Data collection methods include strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis in a townhall setting with elected governmental officials, educational leaders, and business and industry leaders; surveys; interviews; site visits; and literature review of effective CTE practices and programs. The study supported a regional CTE change initiative and resulted in a report that highlighted existing effective practices and known gaps and duplications in CTE programs and offered recommendations on sustaining and scaling effective practices, eliminating duplications, and introducing new programs to address known gaps to address labor market needs.
